Most people farm for resources not for cities. You will all need to upgrade a warehouse to level 6 or 7 at least, configure it to store how you want but make sure it holds enough food to perform (disaster relief). This will be your buffer when you cannot be online. Before you leave burn through as many resources as you can, sell what you cannot use and use the gold to start research.
Before you log off for the night set your tax rate to O you will produce no gold overnight making you less likely to be hit. When you come back and turn your tax rate back up you will produce extra gold until your population falls.
Accept your quest rewards wisely if you have several completed but unawarded you can accept them after you get plundered to regain your resources and maintain production.
Build your city and your beacon tower, research your informatics when you can. You need to know who is attacking you and if you can how many troops they send. If someone is attacking you multiple times we need to know where they live to go kill them.
To new players under BP, I ask you to identify yourselves. We are capable of using your cities as a vault of sorts, since you cannot be attacked and plundered I ask you to allow other players to hide resources inside your cities. Before they sign off they can march workers with their resources to your city, they will accompany that with a mail telling you when the resources are to arrive and what city they came from along with a time they request them back. Build up your workers and try to send the resources back as close to the time they ask as possible. Anyone trying to do this make sure you tell them how much of what and where to send it back to and understand that you may not get it back right when you want it. They have lives too. Also as you will most likely be puting them over their storage capacity their own production will shut down so i ask you to give them 5% of what you store to compensate for that. Giving 5,000 out 100,000 resources to your own alliance members is much better than giving 100,000 to your enemy.
Anyone with two cities be aware that they cannot take your last city, but if you have two they can take one and if they take your main city you will be stuck in the smaller one.
If you fall under attack when you are online you will be able to see the arrival time of the enemy as long as your beacon tower and informatics are high enough. Use this to your advantage, when an attack is 30 min from hitting you sell all your resources. Then use all that gold to buy them back taking your gold to O. The resources take 30 min to transport from the market and will show up just after the attack hits and plunders nothing. You will then have your resources back and be able to continue building. You will of course lose some in the transaction but it will allow you to buy back in whatever proportions you need most, and remember losing a small amount to the market is better than giving it to them to build more troops with.
Level your town halls and cottages, right now with market prices low gold is very valuable and as you cannot hide it in the warehouse I strongly urge you to spend it before you log off, so building it fast when your on is important. A tax rate of 50% will maximize your tax revenue, but make sure your idle population is large enough to recruit soldiers.
